Scholastic Corporation, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, today announced that Thomas K. Hoekzema will be joining the company on September 4 as Senior Vice President, Operations. He will report to Scholastic Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and CFO Maureen O’Connell and will split his time between the New York City headquarters and the Jefferson City, MO location.
Mr. Hoekzema will be responsible for Scholastic’s National Service Organization, which handles warehouse operations, distribution, and customer service, and he will also oversee the company’s logistics operations.
Announcing the appointment, Ms. O’Connell said, “More and more, success in the publishing and media world depends not only on the quality of our products, but on how efficiently they are delivered to our customers. Tom’s extensive experience in all aspects of operations will serve us well as we continue to streamline processes, boost efficiency, and reduce costs for the benefit of both our customers and our bottom line.”
Mr. Hoekzema has over 30 years’ experience in operations. Most recently, he was Senior Vice President of Operations for Direct Holding Worldwide, where he managed a multi-company operations center for Time Life Music & Books, Lillian Vernon, and other distributors. Prior to that, he held senior roles at BMG Direct, including Senior Vice President of Operations for the company and President and CEO of its BeMusic Services division. Mr. Hoekzema was also Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations for Softbank Services and Newfield Publications. Earlier in his career, he was National Manager, Distribution Systems for Avon Products, Inc.
“This is an exciting opportunity for me both professionally and personally, as I’ll be overseeing state of the art distribution systems while supporting the company’s mission of promoting children’s literacy and lifelong learning,” Mr. Hoekzema said.
Mr. Hoekzema is taking over some of the responsibilities that were held by Senior Vice President, Global Operations and Information Technology Beth Ford, who will be leaving Scholastic at the end of September to become EVP and Chief Operating Officer at Hachette Book Group USA. Ms. O’Connell will now directly oversee IT, manufacturing, and supply chain operations, which had been Ms. Ford’s responsibility.
