Scholastic Inc., the global children's publishing and media company will donate 50,000 children's books to sixty-six schools in Guam, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean that was devastated by Supertyphoon Pongsona in December 2002. The books, which Continental Airlines will air freight to Guam at no charge, will be distributed by the International Reading Association in Guam.
“Through Scholastic Book Fairs and Scholastic Book Clubs, our company has a longstanding relationship with schools and students in Guam. We hope that our donation will help schools as they continue to rebuild from the devastating destruction caused by the typhoon,” said Carol Knuth Sakoian, Vice President, International Business Development, Scholastic Inc.
Through Scholastic's Community Affairs division, Scholastic uses its unique assets to support the well being of children and their families by providing books and other in-kind support to various bona fide literacy programs. In any given year, Scholastic donates close to 4 million books across the country. Scholastic is a long time supporter of many of the nation's largest reading and literacy organizations including
