President of Scholastic Education and Alabama Native, Margery Mayer, Visits Selma To Discuss the Importance of Literacy Intervention for Older Struggling Readers

Ms. Mayer to Meet with City and State Officials at Selma Middle School

Selma , AL (May 19, 2004) -- Margery Mayer, President of the Education Division of Scholastic, the global children's publishing and media company with worldwide headquarters in New York City, returns to her home state of Alabama today to meet with city and state officials and students and faculty of Selma Middle School to highlight the urgent need to help older struggling readers master the skills necessary for success in school and in life. Ms. Mayer, who was born and raised in Birmingham, currently oversees Scholastic's Education division, which provides teachers, parents and children with high quality educational materials for use in school and at home.

“I am honored that Selma Middle School's Principal, Charlotte Griffeth, has invited me to visit with her students and staff, and has arranged for me to speak with so many influential individuals in Alabama. Helping students learn to read is at the core of Scholastic's mission and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to see how schools in my home state of Alabama are supporting students in this process,” said Margery Mayer, President, Scholastic Education.

Under Ms. Mayer's leadership, Scholastic developed and launched Scholastic READ 180®, a research and technology-based reading intervention program that is proving successful in helping students in grades 3-12 all across the country do a “180°” turnaround in school. Currently in more than 4,000 school districts nationwide, READ 180 is one of the most thoroughly researched and documented reading intervention programs available today. Seventh and eighth grade students at Selma Middle School and sixth grade students at the School of Discovery, another school in the district, began using READ 180 in the 2003-2004 school year.

As part of her visit to Selma Middle School, Ms. Mayer will tour the school building, including the school's READ 180 classroom, and will meet with Selma Mayor James Perkins, Jr., Alabama Senator Hank Sander, Selma City School Board President Nancy Bennett and many other distinguished guests to discuss the importance of literacy and reading intervention.

Ms. Mayer attended elementary through high school in the Mountain Brook Public School system in Birmingham. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Middlebury College and received her Masters in management from the Sloan School at MIT. Her parents, Elise and Irving Rubel, still reside in Birmingham, AL. Margery currently lives in Larchmont, NY with her husband and two children.
