®, Scholastic’s worldwide headquarters in SoHo’s Cast Iron District is comprised of two co-joined structures that embody the mission, creativity and academic environment of the company. Originally a turn of the century department store, 555 Broadway was renovated by Scholastic and the renowned architectural firm, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer, in 1992. Four years later, as part of the company’s growth strategy, Scholastic commissioned famed Italian architect Aldo Rossi to design and build 557 Broadway, and to merge the two buildings together.
Today, the ground floor lobby, 2
nd floor sky lobby, educational resource center and glass-encased library in the company’s headquarters introduce visitors and employees to the images, ideas and products of Scholastic. In addition, the building has a striking greenhouse terrace and atrium, which houses the employee cafeteria,
The Scholastic Auditorium, a 300-seat state-of-the-art theatre for internal and external meetings, events and live productions, and
The Scholastic Store, a unique retail location that offers award-winning children’s books, toys and educational products for Scholastic’s parent, teacher and child customers.
Commenting on this award, Dick Robinson, President, Chairman and CEO, Scholastic said, “We’re honored that BOMA has recognized Scholastic’s headquarters as a premier building in New York City. From the exterior steel columns that reflect the heritage of SoHo’s classic cast iron architecture to the carpets that line the corridors imprinted with Scholastic’s credo, the building captures the historical feel of the neighborhood and creates an environment that fosters employees’ engagement with the company’s mission to help all children develop a love of reading and learning.”
