MICHAEL DI CAPUA BOOKS / SCHOLASTIC TO PUBLISH MAURICE SENDAK’S FIRST POP-UP BOOK, MOMMY?, IN SEPTEMBER 2006

Collaboration with Award-winning Children’s Writer Arthur Yorinks and New York Times Bestselling Paper Engineer Matthew Reinhart

New York, NY (February 2, 2006) -- Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, today announced its plan to publish an extraordinary pop-up
book by legendary children’s book author / illustrator Maurice Sendak, distinguished author Arthur Yorinks, and paper engineer extraordinaire Matthew Reinhart. Mommy? will be published in September 2006 under Scholastic’s Michael di Capua Books imprint, with a first printing of 500,000 copies. The book is Maurice Sendak’s first pop-up book ever.

In making the announcement, Lisa Holton, President, Scholastic Trade Books and Book Fairs, said, “Mommy? is a brilliant, inventive, and deliciously funny book. It’s the kind of book you have to buy at least five copies of—one for yourself and four for the top booklovers in your life, children and adults alike.”

They're all here! Everybody's favorite monsters are just going about their business when a plucky little boy wanders into their cuckoo house. And what does he want? He wants Mommy! No matter how scary these monsters are, there's no besting a little boy who's looking for his mommy. In one hilarious pop-up extravaganza after another, this kid shows them a thing or two.

Maurice Sendak has received the Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are, the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

Arthur Yorinks has written and directed for opera, theater, dance, film, and radio and is the author of over two dozen books for children, including the Caldecott Medal winner Hey, Al.

Matthew Reinhart illustrated and engineered the bestselling pop-up books Cinderella and, with Robert Sabuda, Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs.
