Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, today announced that David Allender will join Scholastic as Vice President and Editorial Director, Scholastic Book Clubs effective January 30, 2006. In this newly created position, Allender will be responsible for guiding the editorial strategy and product merchandising for a range of special school-based book club offers for students in grades pre-K to 9. He will report directly to Judy Newman, President, Scholastic Book Clubs and Scholastic At Home.
A widely respected and experienced publishing industry executive, Allender will add depth to a dedicated team that makes affordable, high quality books available through Scholastic Book Clubs that reach millions of school children nationwide every month. “David’s deep knowledge of books and kids and his direct marketing expertise are the perfect combination to grow our Clubs business,” said Judy Newman, President, Scholastic Book Clubs. “David is committed to strengthening the connection among teachers, parents, children -- and books -- and what better place to do that than Scholastic where helping all children become good readers is a focus of our corporate mission.”
Prior to joining Scholastic Book Clubs, Allender was Director of Children’s Publishing at Workman Publishing Company where among other projects he was integral in the re-launch of the Brain Quest® product line. Previously, he spent 12 years at Bookspan® where he started the very successful Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club. “David has the ideal experience with book clubs and trade publishing to create special book club offers that address the needs of both parents and teachers,” said Newman. Allender also held positions directing acquisitions for children’s publishing at both HarperCollins and Crown Books.
