2005) --
Scholastic, the global children's publishing and media company, and the New York Women in Communications Foundation, the largest foundation for communications scholarships for women in the NY, NJ, CT area, today announced the creation of the Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and Internship. The annual award will honor the late Judy Corman, a communications strategist whose career spanned over four decades and reflected her passion for both building businesses and helping those in need. The first Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and Internship Award winner will be announced at the NYWICI Matrix Awards on April 11, 2005 in New York City. The deadline to apply for 2005 is January 31, and applications are available at

Ms. Corman, who passed away on November 15, 2004, was most recently Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at Scholastic. In that role, she masterminded the media blitz behind the publication of the Harry Potter books and vigorously promoted new educational technology programs while also advising on philanthropic outreach to fulfill Scholastic's mission of putting books into the hands of all children. Her tenacity, keen intelligence and creativity earned the respect of her clients, her colleagues, and reporters at top media outlets, and in 2001 she was recognized for her accomplishments with the New York Women in Communications Matrix Award in Public Relations.
To foster the talents of the next generation of public relations practitioners, the Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and Internship will award $10,000 annually to a deserving undergraduate or graduate student interested in a career in public relations. In addition to contributing to the cash scholarship, Scholastic will provide the recipient with a paid summer internship in the company's Corporate Communications department, offering hands-on experience in the field and exposure to the dynamic world of publishing.
“We are establishing this memorial fund to honor Judy's legacy and to help future communications professionals appreciate the value of Judy's unwavering commitment to the highest standards of excellence in business and non-profit pursuits, and her zeal for promoting those causes and ideas she believed in so strongly. In addition, this scholarship and internship will enable a promising young woman to work at Scholastic alongside Judy's colleagues, who have been indelibly influenced by their experiences knowing her and learning from her,” said Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO of Scholastic.
“We are deeply appreciative of Scholastic's generosity in establishing a memorial fund that will help develop the next generation of communications professionals,” stated Joannie C. Danielides, President of the New York Women in Communications Foundation. “Judy Corman was a communications maven whose dedication and passion for her work were a true inspiration to all who had the pleasure of working with her. The New York Women in Communications Foundation is extremely pleased to assist in honoring her legacy through the administration of the memorial fund.”
