In keeping with its mission to meet the reading needs of every child, for more than 30 years Scholastic has developed and distributed a wide range of Spanish and bilingual books and materials to children, parents, and teachers in the U.S., and all over the world. Scholastic partners with Latino community leaders, researchers and education experts to develop resources, books, and media that highlight the richness of the Latino culture and foster Latino children’s early literacy and reading abilities. Today, Scholastic is the largest publisher and distributor of Spanish-language books in the United States.
Scholastic reaches the Latino population through unparalleled distribution channels in schools, with Scholastic Book Fairs® and Scholastic Book Clubs' Club Leo™, the largest Spanish school book club in the country offering Spanish, English, and bilingual books and educational materials to children in grades PreK-8.
The Scholastic en español imprint publishes over 100 Spanish-language and bilingual titles each year. The imprint showcases an excellent array of books for children of all ages including original Spanish language works such as Adivinanzas (Riddles), Trablenguas (Tongue Twisters), the new series Eric & Julieta, licensed titles like Clifford The Big Red Dog®, and major bestsellers like Captain Underpants®, the Junie B. Jones series and books by Madonna.
Lectorum Publications was established 46 years ago as a trade bookstore, catering to the needs of the general public and college students in the New York Metropolitan area, but it soon became a nation-wide distributor of adult and children's books, serving public schools, public libraries, universities, and bookstores. Lectorum was acquired by Scholastic in 1996 and has grown to become the largest Spanish-language book distributor of both children's and adult books in the country, with more than 25,000 titles from more than 500 domestic and foreign publishers.
Responding to the community’s desire for an innovative
approach to improve reading and literacy development of Latino
children, Lee y serás® (Read and You Will Be),
a multi-faceted, multi-year reading initiative, was created
by Scholastic, in collaboration with the National Council of
La Raza (NCLR) and Verizon, and is supported by educational
researchers and leaders in the Latino community. The initiative
launched as a pilot program in the San Francisco Bay Area in
fall 2003, and expanded nationally in 2005 at sites including
Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and
Miami. Using an in-culture approach, Lee y serás delivers
the core messages that children’s language and reading
development begin at home and that the community has a responsibility
to help address the reading needs of Latino children.
The initiative employs a wide array of materials and outlets
including: Lee y serás Virtual Caravan, a CD-ROM
tool kit that provides information and resources to implement
the initiative; Lee y serás Family Album, an
audio guide that features culturally authentic stories embedded
with “illustrations” of how reading and literacy
skills are learned and fostered; and Lee y serás
Early Literacy Community Resource Guide, which identifies
existing resources available for community organizations, interested
individuals and academic institutions to support their early
literacy development work with families.
In October 2004, Scholastic
Media (SM), the entertainment and media division of the
