National Governors Association Healthy America Initiative
As part of the National Governors Association's (NGA) Healthy America Initiative, Scholastic
worked with the NGA to publish GO! Healthy Living for Kids. Through stories and games, GO!
encourages young people to eat well, be physically active, and make good choices as they
grow. It also offers parents and caregivers a look into the world of today's young people
and suggests ways families can get healthy and be active together.
Arkansas Read to Feed Challenge
Scholastic, Heifer International, and First Lady Janet Huckabee
formed an exciting alliance to demonstrate the power of how
reading a book can help fight against hunger. The Arkansas Read
to Feed Challenge is a statewide initiative that offers elementary
school students an opportunity to read books and solicit pledges
to provide economic resources to hungry families throughout
the world. As a reward for participating in the program, students
receive a Scholastic Gift Book and earn books for their school
libraries.
Children's Defense Fund Fellows Program
The Children's Defense Fund is a private, non-profit organization
focused on providing a strong and effective voice for children,
paying particular attention to the needs of poor and minority
children and those with disabilities. Scholastic partners with
the Children's Defense Fund to introduce talented college students
to the publishing world through an intensive internship program
which takes place annually at Scholastic headquarters in New
York City. Each year, the Fellows become full-time contributing
members of the Scholastic Trade publishing teams. The group
is assigned a special project to work on throughout the summer
to enable them to apply their skills, abilities, and newly acquired
experience in the real-world business environment. To learn more about the program, please visit the
Scholastic CDF Fellows website.
Corporate Workplace Program
Scholastic serves on the Corporate Advisory Board of The Children's
Aid Society (CAS), a New York City-based nonprofit organization
dedicated to serving the needs of the city's children and families.
Each year, Scholastic executives host a six-week series at Scholastic's
corporate headquarters that provides CAS students with the opportunity
to participate in interactive workshops and career readiness
seminars.
Countdown to Kindergarten
Countdown to Kindergarten is a Boston-based comprehensive effort
to help children successfully transition from home or pre-school
to kindergarten and to prepare parents for their vital roles
as advocates and partners in their child's public education.
The program includes year-round celebratory education and outreach
activities for children, families, schools, and the larger Boston
community. More than 6,000 Boston families are reached by this
program each year and more than 12,000 first graders receive
Scholastic books as they begin their education.
Learning Leaders Program

non-profit organization that provides volunteer tutors to New
York City public schools with technical assistance and in-kind
contributions. Throughout the year, the organization recruits,
trains and supports more than 10,000 volunteers who work with
more than 140,000 students in 760 schools all over the city.
Manhattan Borough President's Office/Parent Power Conference
Scholastic is a sponsor of the Manhattan Borough President's
annual Parent Power Conference. Each year, the Borough President
invites parents from across the City for a one-day intensive
conference that focuses on fostering children's academic achievement.
Books Matter/Principal for a Day
PENCIL (Public Education Needs Civic Involvement in Learning)
was founded to galvanize and coordinate corporate and community
involvement in New York City public education. Scholastic supports

Robin Hood Foundation Library Initiative
Scholastic pledged a donation of one million books to the Robin
Hood Foundation to seed the development of the organization's
Reinventing the Public School Library initiative with
the New York City Board of Education. In addition to the book
donation, the company has provided financial support and significant
technical assistance for this effort to renovate, redesign,
and in some cases construct libraries in New York City public
elementary schools. Established in 1988, The Robin Hood Foundation
finds, funds and strengthens programs that help poor children
and families in New York City.
