The Scholastic Book Grants Program is a philanthropic initiative that provides high-quality reading materials to children in need. The Company's goal is to ensure that each of its book donations has a significant impact on fostering literacy both domestically and abroad.
Each year Scholastic donates books to non-profit organizations that are promoting literacy in communities of need – primarily organizations serving communities that have been affected by natural disasters and organizations that serve early childhood learning in communities where books are not readily available. Recent recipients have included Save the Children, Reach Out and Read, Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.), Feed the Children, Room to Read, and many more.
Due to the unprecedented number of communities that have suffered devastating losses due to natural disasters in recent years, the majority of our donations are being directed to rebuilding efforts in those areas. Therefore, we are not accepting applications for unsolicited donations at this time.
Over the years we have worked hard to ensure that we honor our commitment to help serve the literacy needs of all children, parents, schools, and teachers in underserved and disadvantaged communities and we continue to work to identify key partners who can ensure that our book donations reach the children who need us most. If you are a 501-c3 organization looking for support, please see the Scholastic Literacy Partnerships program. Through Literacy Partnerships, literacy-focused non-profit organizations can receive many benefits including discounted prices of up to 80% on new children’s books as well as free shipping and handling so that they can more effectively support the communities they serve. Scholastic serves hundreds of organizations through these partnerships and we would be pleased to consider your application for the program.
Scholastic recently announced its donation of one million books to Reach Out and Read, the nonprofit organization that helps implement early-childhood literacy awareness during a child's regular medical office visits. Scholastic is a long-time supporter of Reach out and Read, and this donation will help the organization distribute more free books provided by pediatric professionals and hospitals to low income families while educating them about the importance of reading aloud to foster children's early literacy development.
In October 2012, the northeast region of the U.S. was deeply affected by superstorm Sandy. To help in the recovery efforts and provide support for the educators, families and students who suffered losses in the hardest-hit areas of the tri-state region, Scholastic accepted book grant requests from schools, libraries and non-profits devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The company pledged and delivered one million books to 180+ organizations, which are now in the hands of tens of thousands of children in impacted communities. With the assistance of K.I.D.S and their partners Community FoodBank of New Jersey, HopeNYC, and Legacy Center NYC, Scholastic was able to ship books to distribution centers within the affected communities for pick up by the schools. Special thanks to C.H. Robinson and TCSI – Transland for transporting the books from our warehouses to the pickup sites.
