Word Girl
Word Girl™ Ambassador of Summer Reading

Ambassador (am-bas-uh-der): a spokesperson or representative

Scholastic’s Emmy Award®-winning WordGirl® is the national "Ambassador of Summer Reading!” WordGirl is a crime-fighting superhero who uses her vocabulary strength in a never-ending battle for truth, justice and use of the right word. Along with her trusty sidekick Captain Huggy Face, WordGirl enriches children’s vocabulary, instills a love of language, and fosters better reading comprehension.  WordGirl strives to expand childrens’ vocabulary not through rote learning but through exposing kids to new words through story-driven humor and through contexts they find fun and inviting.

WordGirl has adopted summer reading as her cause and encourages children to continue reading over summer vacation because children who read over the summer fare better in school than their peers who read one or no books over the summer. Reading more helps children learn new words, and learning new words helps children become better readers! Having a rich vocabulary enables children to think and express themselves with precision and clarity. It also enhances their reading comprehension and opens new worlds of learning. Children who grow up in language-rich environments exhibit better reading skills, academic performance and overall success in life.
