January 18, 1692 Dear Little Book, Mother says I should use this little book to copy scriptures from the Bible - but I think I shall also write some of my thoughts as well. While my brother John is outside hunting or fishing, I usually tend to the house with Mother, with time left only to read or write the scriptures before bed. How nice that now I can also write in you, Little Book, and tell you all the things that I think and feel. (Since Mother would certainly not approve of me saying it aloud). Today, Martha Abbott from across the way came by to mend linens. I just love her visits! I can barely hold a stitch while she speaks of the most remarkable things - mystics, fortune-telling, and witchcraft! Hopefully, she will be back again tomorrow.
